Richard (Rick) Barber, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has forged a diverse and enriching life journey defined by a love for God, family, people, exploration, history, and culture.
Early Life and Education:
Born and raised in the heart of Philadelphia, Rick’s formative years were shaped by the vibrant and culturally rich environment of the City of Brotherly Love. He received his education through the Philadelphia public school system, which provided a solid foundation for his future endeavors.
Military Service:
With a burning passion for travel and an appreciation for the world’s scenic beauty, Rick made a pivotal decision upon graduating. He joined the United States Air Force (USAF), embarking on a remarkable journey that would take him across continents. After 13 years of dedicated service, he was honorably discharged from the USAF. Upon leaving the Air Force, Rick joined his mother and stepfather in relocating from Philadelphia to Fayetteville, North Carolina. This move was a deliberate choice to create a safer and more nurturing environment for Rick, his wife, and his two sons. The transition allowed them to escape the challenges and dangers often associated with urban life, especially for teenagers.
Personal Life:
Rick reconnected with his elementary school girlfriend, Vandalyn, and their bond blossomed into a lifelong love story. He and Vandalyn have been happily married for three decades, a testament to their enduring commitment to each other, their love of God, and their shared journey.
In 2010 Rick was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The news was shocking. Rick allowed this to be an opportunity to recognize the importance of family. It also helped him to realize that other cancer fighters and survivors need help, comfort, and support. That thought energized him to begin “Cruising Against Cancer,” a non-profit organization that provides all-expense paid vacation cruises for cancer fighters, survivors, and their families.
Current Pursuits:
Today, Rick Barber continues to draw upon the wealth of experiences he gained during his military service and world travels. He recognized the call of God on his life, and after serving several ministries over the course of twenty years, he was called to begin what is now, The Restoration Place (TRP) Ministries in Fayetteville, NC. He has served as Senior Pastor at TRP for the past seven years.
Rick holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the Carolina College of Biblical Studies, demonstrating his dedication to the study of theology and biblical knowledge. He is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from the same institution, furthering his commitment to the study of theology and the spiritual development of individuals and communities. He remains dedicated to sharing his insights and fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our spiritual nature to God and our global society. Whether through public speaking, writing, or community engagement, Rick’s passion for people and appreciation of diverse cultures continues to inspire and enlighten those who cross his path.
Rick has a loving wife, Vandalyn; five children, Tuesday Lovette Irby, Damon Smith, Richard II, Robin, and Chela’ Scott; fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandson.
